Why do we continue to ignore the opportunity of Aviation and the Business of Aviation as a career choice in Ireland?

Careers in the airline industry focus on all aspects of commercial flying, including ticket sales, aircraft maintenance and piloting aircraft. All occupations in the airline industry require some training, either on-the-job or a formal education program, depending on the job. Airline management courses are usually part of an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or professional training certificate program in aviation management or airline management. In addition to topics in aviation laws and regulations, air transport and airline industry operations, there is a strong focus on Business. Finance, human resources, strategic management and global business are all included. Programs specific to this industry are available through College Ireland Aviation Services in Ireland for example the Higher Cert in Business(Aviation) Management due to commence in January with the Institute of Technology, Blanchardstown. This programme will cover all facets within the Business side of the Aviation Business as well as a providing a good knowledge of business practice and process.

Irish undergraduates as well as young professionals are being left behind as a result of not choosing Aviation as a career option. The career opportunities are limitless, and can be accessed not just in Ireland but also abroad. Just look at the Irish nationals at senior levels in many of the world's leading Aviation companies such as John Hartnett is an independent non-executive director to the board of Aer Lingus, Judy Byrne, Co-Founder of Crewlink Ireland, Dr David Moriarty BSc (Hons) MBBS MSc MRAeS - CityJet, Adrian Foley- Transaero, Peter Barry - PWA International, Anita baumer- Cityjet, Michael Hickey- Ryanair, Hugh Flynn- Aircontractors, Sean Flannery- GE Capital, Ray Gammel- Etihad Airlines, Brendan Noonan-Emirates..etc. The Aviation Industry continues to grow. Take the following example: British Airways already operates 120 Airbus single aisle aircraft covering the full Family range from the smallest A318 to the largest A321.IAG’s’ recent selection of the A320neo Family for its single aisle fleet is a significant win for Airbus. This recent order by British Airways means IAG sustains several thousand aviation jobs throughout the UK, where the wings are designed and assembled. It also contributes some £40million to the UK economy. In August 2013, IAG announced that, as part of a Vueling order for up to 120 Airbus A320 family aircraft, it had also secured 100 A320neo options. The Leasing Industry is vibrant and continues to grow with programmes in Project Management and Aircraft Leasing available in Dublin. So why do we continue to ignore Aviation Management as a career choice in Ireland?

The growth of Aircraft Leasing in Ireland and the increased demand for training in this area. Short Course starts end of Feb.

In Ireland there has been a lot of media coverage around the growth of the aircraft leasing industry. This, alongside a number of changes in the MRO field, has led to people looking at a possible 'change in direction' of their career. Within the industry people are aware that working in the leasing side of the business is alot more intensive that working with airlines. Irish professionals are also looking to Asia, USA and UAE for relocation opportunities in this area, there is great local contract opportunities that offer significant remuneration packages without having the burden of the expenses felt when moving as a expat. Asia continues to grow with demands for experienced staff in region, still in its infancy with leasing companies fighting for a small pool of experienced staff available to them. They have a bigger pool to choose from by looking to Irish Professionals trained in the Aircraft Leasing Sector.

Investec for example host our graduation ceremony for upcoming programmes.

In college Ireland we have seen the demand for training in this sector increase substantially. Already our recent courses in Aircraft Leasing & Project Mgt have been full and we have a second round in February and we are now providing second classes to facilitate demand in this area.
Naturally to complete this programme in four weeks full time or 14 weekends part time, is an asset to a person looking to access or get promoted in this vibrant industry.

The nature of the Aircraft Leasing business continues to be a 24/7 business, so it is difficult to find a work life balance there. In saying that companies are starting to get better at ensuring they are staffed enough to allow breathing space. "We see new opportunities for change stemming from the growing interest from hedge funds and other investors looking at aircraft leasing as a suitable investment space.  Companies like First Star, who have opened their doors to aircraft leasing and Apollo Aviation who recently raised USD$640 million in funding for aircraft and engine acquisitions. These funds, as well as others, need staff, both to originate and manage the transactions. ILFC the 2nd largest lessor will soon merge with Aercap and this may create duplication of roles and bring new candidates into the job market.  Both ILFC and Aercap have offices in China, Singapore, USA, Amsterdam and Ireland. No doubt Aercap will seek to gain efficiencies across the board" states Keith Garry of Aircraftleasing.ie.

It is known in the aviation industry that those working within the aircraft leasing market are highly motivated people, otherwise how would you survive the demands put on you? However this high level motivation makes for a very rewarding Industry. From an employment point of view the industry at present is the most vibrant it has been since the credit crunch. With so much activity and interest in the market at present, people are demanding training courses to be made available in order to tap into these opportunities.

Investing in yourself for 2015? College Ireland and ITB launch the Higher Cert in Aviation Mgt this January.

Are you bored- Does your mind need some TLC? Do you need to shake up your thinking? Are you looking to move into management, possibly move between Business or Aviation Sectors, increase your prospects of promotion? When was the last time you invested in yourself, your learning, doing things better, looking at situations through a different set of eyes, picking up new skills and learning's that straight away you see it MAKES A DIFFERENCE TO HOW YOU OPERATE professionally and personally? read on...

College Ireland and IT Blanchardstown have a solution for you! Why not take up an Accredited Programme? Lets look at the Higher Cert in Business Mgt (Aviation). Not only does it lead to the option of a Degree (one year later), it also provides for you general business management, you will learn the characteristics, regulations and mechanisms of the aviation industry. Research and project work help to deepen and intensify your knowledge.
Think about it, Look at Aviation Technical Professionals who want to move up the management ladder, they need to be able to read and understand more than just technical manuals and be able to write more than logbook entries. In particular, moving into supervisory and management positions usually means being able to articulate maintenance issues or needs to an audience not intimately familiar with maintenance.

For example, a supervisor may have to write up budget justifications and incident or accident reports, including government inquiries from the IAA, the Airport Authority, and other agencies. With the cutbacks in administrative and human resource personnel, maintenance supervisors and managers are often left on their own to fill out paperwork. And since maintenance is a 24/7 operation, problems that require written reports can occur at times when 9-5 employees are off duty and unavailable for assistance.
By the time you graduate, you will have an excellent academic education and a perfect starting point for an international aviation career or progression in your current career. The programme's strong academic focus and its practical components have repeatedly received praise from the industry.
  • Faculty with proven international experience
  • Instruction in small, international groups
  • Theory and practice linked through case studies and projects with international organisations
  • Development of key social, professional and intercultural skills
  • Access to extensive industry contacts for career opps, including information and networking programmes

Also keep in mind our Accountable Manager course: Aviation safety inspectors are a very important part of overall aviation safety and it is up to them to decide whether an aeroplane is fit to fly. Of all the aviation safety jobs, it could be argued that aviation safety inspector has the most important because it is up to him to sign off all work and ensure that it is of a good standard. To access these jobs one must have a sound understanding of the responsibilities involved. "Accountable Manager is a niche area, its always been there, and its always going to be, it is what it is. Its for someone who is taking on a senior position in key aviation disciplines", mentions Brian Joyce Executive Chairman College Ireland.
